This afternoon I spent some time with Esther Mestemacher, we talked about her time spent as a nurse during wwll in England which is also where she met her future husband Bud. They were not supposed to date per Army regulation but did and it was well worth it. They eventually ended up back in MN where they made there home and raised their four children on Grindstone lake.
Esther, now 93, lives in Pine City. She is very modest about her service to her country. While I only spent half an hour with Esther she shared with me quite a few stories, photographs and memorabilia. It was when she spoke of Bud that I could see a little something extra in her eyes.
Esther has a love for poetry and a knack for memorization, she shared with me a beautiful poem she had written entitled For Those Who Love....
